In October 1991, the ABPN and the ABMS formed the Committee on Certification of Added Qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry. This was done to formally recognise addiction psychiatry as a distinct subspecialty of psychiatry and to give a mechanism of recognising addiction psychiatrists who are adequately trained and experienced.
The Board has assigned the actual mechanics of certifying suitable candidates to the Committee, which functions under the supervision of the Board and in compliance with its rules.
In February 1997, the Board agreed with the ABMS to stop referring to this credential as having “Added Qualifications.” The certificate’s and Committee’s names were changed to “Certification in the Subspecialty of Addiction Psychiatry” at that time.
Addiction Psychiatry Boards
Applicants for certification in addiction psychiatry must have received general psychiatry certification from the Board by December 31 of the year preceding the examination. All applicants, except those admitted during the practise pathway period, must submit documentation of successful completion of one year of ACGME-accredited addiction psychiatry fellowship training that began after general residency training in psychiatry, including time spent in combined training programmes, was completed. The one year of training does not include the exposure to addiction psychiatry that psychiatry residents receive as part of their basic psychiatry programme. By July 31 of the examination year, all licence and training requirements must be met.
