Guide to Buying a New Coffee Maker

Spread the love

When looking for a coffee maker there a few things you should know before you decide to purchase one and knowing these things will help you decide in making that right buying decision.

For instance, did you know that a thermal carafe will hold more heat and keep your coffee warmer than a glass carafe? Can a glass carafe burn your coffee and cause damage to your coffee maker? Also, the french press coffee or any type of coffee made without a paper filter may do well.

We wanted to give a few helpful points of advice from our point of view and what other experts have to say when looking to buy a coffee maker:

Capacity:

It may not be practical to buy a large coffee maker if there are just a handful of people that will be drinking coffee. Although, larger coffee makers can brew 4 Cups, such as an 8, 10, 12 coffee maker; purchasing an Urn that makes 40-52 cups would not be sufficient.

Heat:

A cup of coffee begins with the temperature and the time required to brew. Most coffee makers do not get hot enough or else they get too hot and end up burning the bottom of a carafe or scorch the hot plate. Ideally, the temperature should be about 200 degrees or 1250 watts of power and brew for 5 minutes.

Materials:

Metal, stainless steel, plastic, or glass. A coffee maker is generally made up of a couple of these materials. The best carafe is a thermal carafe that is made from plastic and is insulated.

This will hold the heat and worry about an automatic shutoff will be unnecessary. A coffee maker like the Hamilton Beach Electrics is a sturdy product made from steel. Plastic is lighter than those made from metal or stainless steel.

Most metal and stainless steel coffee makers are made to become fixtures, rather than something you move around frequently, such as the Saeco Primea.

Warranty:

The more luxurious coffee makers like the Saeco Odea come with long-lasting warranties, unlike lower-end products.

We are very surprised to find that the Cuisinart Brew Central came with a three-year warranty, it’s one of our top picks. In the budget coffee machine, Bonavita Bv1900TS Carafe Coffee Brewer is a kitchen appliance that takes away all the hassle and concentrates on brewing the perfect pot of hot coffee for you.

Programmable:

This feature is very convenient and highly recommended. Most people forget to turn their coffee makers off after that last cup has been poured.

Another option is to buy a thermal carafe and not have to worry about scorching.

Water Filtration:

If you want to buy one that has a water filter system because you’re concerned about the taste of your water, it’s best just to put in a household or sink water filtration system.

Sometimes having extra features in your coffee maker means that’s just one more thing that may stop working.

Coffee Filters:

If the taste is a concern, another option is to consider reusable coffee filters. These are made of light plastics or metals and can be cleaned with soap and water. Some are dishwasher safe.

By standard, if a coffee maker comes with one, if you don’t like it, you can easily remove it and place paper filters in its place. It’s a matter of personal choice and doesn’t affect the performance of the coffee maker, but having a reusable filter may give you the benefit of having better-tasting coffee.
